Site Update 7-26

Well I got the website pretty much complete at the moment.  I implemented a new technology for Joomla called K2.  It's a way to build all the pages where they are all uniform without a whole lot of effort.  I know that's my OCD kicking in again but I like things to be uniform and sleek.

It also speeds up the site quite a bit.  Of course I'm still learning about K2 and there are quite a few things that it has and it offers that I'm not implementing yet, so there may be a whole lot more in the future that the site can actually do.  The biggest thing right now was the top menu buttons, using Joomla standard menus in certain browsers certain technologies take precedent over other technologies.  For example Internet Explorer and Google Chrome give flash a higher priority than Java and thus flash is always on top of Java and the menus being Java and the big image slider being flash the menus would come down behind the image slider and be hidden.  Firefox is just the opposite it gives Java the higher priority thus the menus worked correctly.

Now I don't have any control over what browser people use, so I have to build a site that's cross browser capable.  What K2 allowed me to do that regular Joomla wouldn't, it allowed me to put tags on the articles for example "live show" or "television" or "music video" and I can assign those tags to those menu buttons at the top so that when you click on live shows it brings up all the articles that are tagged with that particular tag and so on for the other buttons.

That's just one of the neat things about K2.  Other things are that it allows for enhanced spam protection for comments, a really neat photo gallery that I haven't implemented yet as well as social networking integration.  I had seen it advertised for quite some time but just had never taken the time to delve into it.  From what I can see it's actually a very exciting enhancement to Joomla and Joomla was already pretty exciting all on its own.

As far as content goes, I have some really exciting things coming up.  A 1964 episode of Ready Steady Go that featured Otis Redding, a few clips of other artists from about the same time period appearing on that show as well.  Then I'm working on right now a really nice documentary called Rock City that has performances from 1964 through 1974 of such acts as the stones, Otis Redding, Eric Burden, cream, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart and Ike and Tina Turner.  I know I'm forgetting a few but those are really the headliners.

I'll be getting that one cut up tonight and have it out sometime this week.  It's all good high-definition stuff from Palladia, I've also got some stuff that I'm debating whether or not to even edit.  It's good, it's live, but it's mostly older bands recorded in 1999 that have only one or two original members.  Lots of good songs and some good performances, but it's just not the stuff that I generally put up.

I'll also be recording some good stuff this week that should make the site.  Such as Bon Jovi unplugged, the Fender Stratocaster special with Joe Walsh and David Gilmour and others, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Darius Rucker etc.

Anyway that's the nuts and bolts and the nitty-gritty of what's happened to the site and what will be happening in the future.
